POLICE have warned commuters to approach the N2, going north and south, just before Sibaya Drive with caution after protesters blocked off all four lanes with burning tyres. According to the uMhlanga ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, the residents from the Blackburn Village Informal Settlement are demanding free electricity. It’s believed a man was killed over the weekend after he stepped on an illegal connection.
“The residents are also protesting a lack of basic service delivery. They are angry about the electricity situation and want to know when they will be moved to the Cornubia development. According to police on scene, the protesters have blocked lanes with burning tyres and bushes. I’d urge residents to avoid the area and use the M4 as an alternative. Some motorists are driving around the burning debris but I urge them to be cautious,” he said.
