No repairs for Durban’s damaged stormwater drains

A Glen Anil resident said despite numerous attempts she has been unable to get through to the Municipality to report damaged stormater drains in her property.

IT has been three weeks since hundreds of homes across Durban were damaged by the torrential rains. Most of the flooding was the result of blocked or collapsed stormwater drains.

This was the case, for Glen Anil resident, Edith Viljoen (59). However, the frustrated resident said no one has come to inspect let alone repair the damaged drains, as she has been unable to get through to the Municipality.

Viljoen’s entire home on The Curl, was flooded after the mud and debris clogged the stormwater drains on her property. One of the drains also collapsed.

Mud and debris are still blocking the drains.

“Within minutes I was knee-deep in water. I live on the lowest part of Glen Anil, so all the water came flooding into my yard – from every side, but there was nowhere for it to go. While my furniture floated around in my home one of my dogs tried to find sanctuary on the coffee table,” she said.

Not only was her brand new car flooded, but Viljoen has had to replace her kitchen cupboards.

“I salvaged as much as I could, but some items, such as photo albums that were damaged cannot be replaced,” she added.

What’s more, the resident said this was not the first time she had experienced floods at her home.

“I have lived here for 35 years, and in 1985 the same thing happened. There is an issue here and it needs to be addressed,” she said.

Residents have also reported that the stormwater drain that collapsed on Marion Avenue in Glenashley, which also damaged a section of the road, has also been left unattended.

The eThekwini Municipality had not commented at the time of publication.
