Power outages leave Kenville community in the dark

The power outages have compromised the recovery of an ailing 69-year-old woman.

A WEEK after residents from Parkington Grove voiced their anger over the illegal connections that had left them without power for eight straight days, residents from Kenville have also expressed their frustrations. For seven days now the electricity supply has been erratic.

Solly Kharodia (70) said he and several other homeowners on Smithfield Road have been struggling without power since Sunday.

He said his biggest concern was for his wife, who is severely ill and dependent on a nebuliser.

“Every day the power goes off around 6pm, and then after we have phoned in to report the power outage an electrician has been sent out the next day to make repairs. My wife, Rabaya (69) is not well. Not only does it make it difficult to care for her, but she has medicine worth thousands of Rands, which need to be kept in the refrigerator, which does not work. All our food have gone off,” he said.

The frustrated resident said authorities had originally claimed that illegal power connections were to blame, but on Friday he was told that the issue lays with a blown transformer. Kharodia said he was outraged not only by the fact that it has taken authorities this long to figure out the cause of the issue, but that municipal workers are being sent to replace street light globes in the area.

“What is the sense in replacing globes when there is no power? There should have been a solution already. I feel like the Municipality does not care. All we get is the run around from officials who keep placing the blame on another department,” he said.
