SHARKS have mutilated the body of the unknown man recovered from the uMngeni River mouth on Sunday, complicating the identification process.
Captain Nqobile Gwala, police spokesperson, said the body had been mangled beyond recognition. She said the left arm had been ripped off and was missing.
It was also confirmed by Dave Steyn, head of the SAPS Search and Rescue, that the body had not been washed down during last month’s heavy rain.
“The body had only been in the water for about five days, and therefore was not related to the recent flash floods,” he said.
Gwala said an inquest docket had been opened and the case is being investigated by Point SAPS.
Members of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) recovered the body about three kilometres off shore after a fisherman made the grisly discovery.
