Lee crowned boxing champ

Newly crowned champs says challengers will have to fight him in KZN for the belt.

AS his fight for the South African Super Middleweight title bout neared, Durban North boxer, Lee Dyer had just one thing on his mind, defeating Balimo Weliya. Previous to this fight, the Congolese born fighter had never been knocked-out or defeated in his title reign, that was until last Sunday. Dyer scored an impressive technical knockout (TKO) against Weliya, stopping the fight in the 12th and final round.

“It was amazing, this is something I’ve dreamt about for so long. There were so many feelings running through my head but I’m blessed to win this title. I stuck to my game plan even though I suffered a set back in the second round. He knocked me down, and I admit I was a bit shaken but when I got to my corner, Trevor reminded me that I still had 10 rounds to go, the fight was not over.

“As the rounds went on, I felt reinvigorated and I kept getting stronger and landing more punches. I had a title shot against Balimo in 2010 but I broke my ankle before the fight so to win this is fantastic. I have the utmost of respect for Balimo, he was certainly one of the toughest opponents I’ve fought, he took some clean shots in the fight. I’m just enjoying this victory with my family,” he said.

Dyer has now been inspired to get ‘Your Name is Victory’ tattooed on his body and dedicated his victory to God.

His trainer and best friend, Trevor Wolmarans, runs a boxing gym with Dyer, Domination Knuckle Game said Dyer deserved to be champ.

“He was lightning fast in the ring. He outclassed him and executed his plan to perfection. We said before the fight that the belt was staying in KZN. Now we are telling anybody who wants to fight for the title, they are going to have to fight Lee here,” he said.
