‘Love Our Trails’ appeals outdoor enthusiast

The 29-year-old has started a movement to rehabilitate nature and adventure trails across the country.

OUTDOOR enthusiast Blake Dyason is on a mission to eradicate litter and graffiti from South African Trails through his international movement, Love Our Trails.

The Cape Town resident, hopes to create awareness and educate the public on the importance of caring for the country’s nature and adventure trails.

“I was running up Table Mountain, which is one of the most beautiful landmarks in our country and noticed loads of litter and graffiti along the trails. It was absolutely heartbreaking,” said Dyason

“For days after I kept asking myself who is actually responsible for cleaning this mess, and then one night I woke up and realised that we as citizens should stop pointing fingers at the government and other authorities and ask ourselves ‘what are we doing to alleviate the situation?’ And so I decided to take matters into my own hands and started the Facebook page, which soon went viral,” he said.

Through the social media platform the 29-year-old has been facilitating community clean-ups.

“We all have a responsibility to make the world around us a better place. It is easy and rewarding,” added Dyason.

He is now searching for ambassadors, including individuals, schools and companies to organise such clean ups under the Love Our Trails banner across the country.

He said he also wanted to educate the public on misconceptions on sustainability.

“People think that tossing a banana peel or apple core is sustainable and good for the environment, but in reality the latter can take up to two and a half months to decompose, while a banana peel takes seven years,” he said.
