Marc wins emotional masters champs

The 54-year-old who was part of a Invitation Team also dedicated his victory to 2015 SA Over 60 Champion, Dave Fish, who passed away tragically recently.

SUNNINGDALE’S Marc Wright was recently crowned the Grandkahunas champ at the SA Masters Surfing Championships held in Cape St Francis. It was an emotional win for the local resident who cancelled a trip to the Seychelles to celebrate his 25th anniversary with his wife due to the death of his close friend, Dave Fish.

The team winners, Buffalo City Surfriders dedicated their victory to teammate and South African surfing legend and 2015 SA Over 60 Champion, Dave Fish, who passed away tragically recently.

The 54-year-old who was part of a Invitation Team also dedicated his victory to Fish.

“It was surreal hearing the news of his passing. We had booked to go to the Seychelles and the masters association asked if I wanted to be part of the invitational team to honour his memory.

“The masters champs was something Dave worked so hard to promote, and I could not pay homage to me. I feel he had something to do with my win, I was sitting nowhere and then all of a sudden there was a great wave that won me the heat. I looked up to the heavens and said ‘thank you Dave’. It was probably the most emotional and one of the most memorable wins in my career,” he said.

The former Durban High School (DHS) pupil who grew up in North Beach, said his love for the sport was grown out of the camaraderie and spirit of other surfing legends, like Chris Knutsen and Shaun Tomson.

“I loved the feeling of being out on the waves and it was a relatively cheap sport so the love for the sport just grew. It was great being around legends like Shaun (Tomson), who I surfed with and against which was fantastic. The sport also gave me an appreciation of the ocean. The rest as they say is history,” he said.
