Floods cause devastation at Virginia Airport

It is estimated that millions of Rands of damage was done at the airport.

THE recent heavy rains and flooding have caused millions of Rands of damage at the Virginia Airport. Eight cars as well as a number of computers and servers were damaged at the site.

According to eyewitnesses several of the vehicles were seen drifting in the rising water in the car park during yesterday’s floods. Water flooded into the terminal and other buildings at the site.

What’s more, an anonymous source at the airport said it has been exactly a five years since the airport was last flooded.

“People think that the weathers abnormal, but it is not. This was not an isolated incident. Since 1997 we have experienced four floods at the airport,” he said.

“Most of the water came from Danville and Margaret Maytom Avenues, where we suspect the storm water drains were blocked with debris. The storm water system at the Virginia Circle is working perfectly and did not overflow, as many people have alleged,” the source said.

When the Northglen News arrived at the scene earlier today massive clean-up was underway. The runway is clear and most of the damage was done at the terminal.
