Overwhelming response for Lakehaven youth centre

Durban North resident says the response for the Youth Centre victims has been 'heart-warming and overwhelming'.

THERE has been an overwhelming response from the North Durban community for the Lakehaven/Zamani Child and Youth Care Centre. Durban North resident, Jodie-Lee Donnison, who offered her assistance to the centre that was damaged by a fire early on Thursday morning said she was blown away by the love and support from the community.

Eight people, including seven children were killed in the blaze at the centre in Sea Cow Lake. It’s believed seven of the children killed in the incident, have living relatives. One adult also perished in the blaze.

When Northglen News met with Donnison on Friday, her brother’s CrossFit gym on Rinaldo Road was packed with food, clothing, blankets, mattresses and toiletries.

“There are no words, the generosity and love from my friends, family and this community has been unbelievable. I had more than 45 people phone me to offer whatever they could. So many residents and businesses donated food; a gentleman who saw my appeal is donating 40 mattresses, another lady lodged R5 000 into the centre’s account, I even had calls from as far afield as Sydney pledging their support.

“No words will ever be enough, but thank you. I am so blown away and I know this home is going to feel so loved. We have more than two bakkie loads for the centre and we will be delivering the items on Monday. I’d like to thank everyone who donated and offered assistance, it’s incredible how the community has been united through this tragedy.”
