Cabinet speaks out on SABC debacle

The statement comes in the wake of a wave of discontment over various descisions taken by the public broadcaster’s Chief Operating Officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

THE SABC will continue to serve the interests of all the people of South Africa. That’s according to Cabinet who made the statement on Friday afternoon.

“The role of the SABC as the public broadcaster remains vital for the development of our young democracy.
“The current discussion over the SABC’s editorial decisions regarding the broadcasting of images of violence and destruction of property should be held in a constructive manner that would serve to strengthen our democracy,” they said.

Cabinet reaffirmed its support for media freedom, freedom of expression and the right of any person to access information in South Africa.

It said these rights, well enshrined in the Constitution, will always be upheld and protected by all.
The statement comes in the wake of a wave of discontment over various descisions taken by the public broadcaster’s Chief Operating Officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng, chief amongst which was that footage of violent protests rocking the country would not be covered and aired.
