A CANADIAN man who has spent $60 000 (R840 000) over eight years of work has created tyres, that allow vehicles to move in any direction. The omnidirectional wheel design was developed by William Liddiard.
While omnidirectional wheels are not entirely new, Liddiard’s protoype shows them in action,
The wheels not only allow the car to move sideways, but also allow it to turn in a full circle, providing mobility in tight spaces.
The video shows his Toyota turn from head to tail without any forward motion.
“I had to improvise a lot, use the materials available to me, and work on it sparingly when I could find the time. I decided to put them on my car. Unlike other omni capable wheels, my wheels do not require the vehicle to be built around them. This is a world first bolt-on application for anything with wheels. Designed to be used in all weather and road conditions,” he said.
