City can’t confirm medical waste investigations

According to the City’s Logie Naidoo there is no dedicated unit investigating the source of the medical waste at Beachwood Beach.

MORE than one month after medical waste washed up along the uMngeni River and Beachwood Beach near Blue Lagoon, the eThekwini Municipality still has not found its source.

William Collingwood, a Red Hill resident, who first spotted the illegal waste on 16 May said that he had once again come across condoms, pills and medicine containers that had washed up along the beach on Sunday.

But this time Serenace, pills used to treat mental illnesses such as, schizophrenia, mania and severe anxiety were also found.

What’s more, Logie Naidoo, speaker of the eThekwini Municipality said he was not aware of any dedicated organization conducting an investigation to determine the source of the waste, which shut down several Durban North beaches in May.

He said he would be following up with the head of Parks, Recreation and Culture Department, Thembinkosi Ngcobo.

“We are currently not sure who is responsible for the waste or the source of the waste. We have a dedicated that is equipped to quickly clean up the waste,” he said.

Naidoo appealed to members of the public who might have any information regarding the ‘culprits’ or the source to come forward.

“We would love to get to the bottom of this. If information comes in we will act,” he added.
