Counterfeit factory closed down in Durban

The factory workers were making fake versions of popular name brand clothing.

JUST days after the arrest of four men linked to the Narandas Jewellers robbery at Gateway, the Hawks have continued their good work by closing a counterfeit factory in the Durban CBD. The incident occurred on Tuesday and goods comprising of Nike, Puma, Vans, Levis, Adidas and Roxy branded clothing valued at approximately R900 000 were seized.

Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo of the Hawks said members received a complaint from Nike brand holder about street vendors who were selling their brand in the street.

“We pursued the information that led them to a building in the CBD. A search warrant was obtained and an operation was conducted yesterday. Nike Brand Protection Manager was at the scene to identify their brand.

“Counterfeits goods valued approximately R 900 000 were seized. Members also seized sewing machines and other equipment used to manufacture counterfeits. The owner of the factory is still at large and no arrest has been made at this stage,” Mhlongo said.
