Truck driver strike a hoax, says workers union

A message on social media alleges that a national strike could leave motorists without fuel.

A MESSAGE circulating social media has caused public panic, claiming that there will be a national truck driver strike this week. The message warned people to fill up their tanks as petrol and diesel would become scarce on Thursday.

However, Clement Chitja, the head of department for collective bargaining at Chemical Energy Paper Printing Wood and Allied Workers Union (CEPPWUA) said their was no truth behind the message.

Chitja confirmed that there has been wage dispute between their members and employers, but added that  there have been no talks or agreements made with regards to a strike.

“Negotiations are underway, but an agreement has not been reached, and we are still consulting with our members nationally on the next step to take,” he said.

The message, which has been doing the rounds on various platforms reads:

“Please note that it has just been confirmed by Chevron that SEPPAWU`s strike will officially start tomorrow and that it will be a National Strike.  Everybody has been warned and asked to fill up their fuel tanks  so as to be prepared. It has also been confirmed that the “The Fuel Delivery Strike”, started on Monday the 27th already but has been kept quiet to prevent overloading at petrol stations.”

CEPPWUA represents truck drivers who are employed by oil refinery companies in the country.
