Do you know where your meat comes from?

The union has slammed the current legislation saying it could 'mislead' consumers.

THE South African National Consumer Union (SANCU) has recently called for an amendment of the current legislation that regulates the packaging and labelling of meat products in South Africa.

According to the union’s vice chairperson‚ Ina Wilken, the Department of Agriculture’s current legislation allows for ambiguous labelling, which does not require that retailers specify the origins of the meat.

This, she said, provided retailers with an opportunity to mislead the consumers.

She said while regulations demand that containers transporting meat from foreign countries are marked with the exact origin the consumers only get to see the packaged product.
