DOMESTIC workers in La Lucia and Somerset Park are being targeted by criminals. In the last two weeks, there has been three incidents of robbery. According to Carol van Tonder, a police reservist and Durban North Umhlanga Crisis Team (DNUCT) member, a domestic worker was attacked by two men on Round The Green at about 3.30pm on Tuesday.
“The two men attacked her and tried to grab her bag, a man in a car saw what was happening and stopped to help. The criminals ran away. She later told me it’s not the first time. In a separate incident, a domestic worker was robbed of her valuables near Armstrong Avenue last week by a man who grabbed her bag and jumped into a getaway car,” she said.
Van Tonder urged domestic workers to, where possible, try and walk in groups to avoid falling victim to muggings.
