Mrs SA finalist makes an impression

The Mount Edgecombe resident is set to empower young women by educating them on the importance of first impressions and professional etiquette.

EMPOWERING young women is something close to the heart of Mrs South Africa finalist, Trisa Poona. The Mount Edgecombe resident was recently inspired to present an informative talk on self-confidence and first impressions at Effingham Secondary School.

According to the fitness and image consultant, self-confidence is important for a happy and successful life. “If you feel confident in yourself you are more likely to try new things, do all the things you want to do and succeed in them. Other people will also believe in you and your abilities,” she said.

“In hindsight, looking back over years of experience – job interviews, marriage, children and my travels I would like to share with these young women the things I wish I had known back then. First impressions have become particularly important in this day and age, and my aim was not only to help build their self-confidence but also to teach them how to conduct themselves professionally,” explained the mother of two.

During the event, over 100 young women were treated to a demonstration on manners, etiquette, basic beauty tips and self-defence.

“Mrs South Africa has taught me that we, as women, should not be in competition with each other, but rather uplift each other. It has been a truly rewarding and inspirational journey,” she said.

Poona said her ultimate goal would be to present the talk at various other schools in Durban and to incorporate the mothers of the young women into the initiative.

“As a mother I am aware of the challenges we face. We often lose ourselves in our responsibilities and I would like to remind all the mums that they have something to offer. They just need to find that inner voice. After all, they are the examples for our future generations,” she said.
