SPCA issues poison warning

There has been a recent spike in animal poisoning in and around Durban.

THE Durban and Coast SPCA has issued a warning to all pet owners following a recent spike in dog poisonings in and around Durban.

“Following recent reports regarding animals being poisoned, we would like to caution all pet owners to be vigilant and protect themselves and their animals as much as possible,” the NPO said.

According to the statement the SPCA as well as the SAPS have received reports of poisoning in Hillary, Seaview, Bellair, Yellowwood Park and Montclair.

The poison that has reportedly been used is very dangerous and can be absorbed through the skin, the SPCA warned. In April the Glenhills community was horrified after a dog on Daphne Road died, reportedly after ingesting poison that the home owners discovered at the front gate.

The SPCA has listed the following safety tips:
– Be aware of unusual or suspicious substances or food in and around your property.
– Handle any suspicious material with gloves and ensure that it is removed and inaccessible to your pets.
– Keep your pets indoors at night, if possible.
– Report any suspicious substance or material found to your nearest police station as these incidents could be a precursor to further criminal activity such as house breaking or vehicle thefts.
– Be aware of changes in your pet’s behaviour or eating patterns.
– Seek veterinary attention immediately if you suspect that your animals may have ingested poison.
– It is suggested that people train their dogs not to eat food other than that given to them in their bowls.
