Pug-tastic walk for canines

Organisers hope that the walk will facilitate the adoption of over 100 pugs that are in desperate need of a home.

IT was a tail-wagging affair as dozens of pugs and their owners descended on the Durban Promenade for the third annual Durban Pug Walk on Sunday.

The primary aim of the event, said organiser, Storm Veronie, was to raise awareness for the animal rescue organisation, Pug Rescue South Africa. The organisation, founded by Cheryl and Malcolm Gow, strives to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home abandoned, neglected and surrendered pugs.

“Through these walks and other fundraisers we hope to highlight the organisation so that people immediately think of Pug Rescue South Africa when they are considering a new family companion. We have so many loveable dogs in need of a home,” said the Durban North resident.

Since the beginning of the year 127 pugs have been surrendered into the care of the organisation and its volunteers and over 100 of these dogs are currently waiting to be adopted,” said Veronie.

In addition to awareness Veronie said she hoped to raise some funds as well as facilitate more interaction between pug lovers.

“As volunteers we try and organise as many fundraisers in Durban as possible so that we can continue to rescue and rehome these loveable dogs. We are thrilled by today’s turnout as so many people and pugs were seen on the day. This is such a special breed, so we are hoping to organise play dates and other networking opportunities for pug owners,” she added.

The animal activist and her partner, André Botha, are also two of dozens of volunteers who foster, conduct home checks and rescue the tiny creatures from dire circumstances.
