‘Gogo Reginah’ turns tragedy into triumph

Following the death of her daughter Gogo Reginah Mkhize hopes to start her own entrepreneurial business where she can train and employ others.

AT the age of 57, KwaMashu resident, Reginah Mkhize, still has a lot of dreams and ambitions. While working as a domestic at two companies in uMhlanga during the day she spends most of her nights perfecting her plans to become a self-sustaining entrepreneur.

Over the last few decades Mkhize has always made and sold her beautiful crochet bags with beaded details to earn extra income for her family, but after the recent tragic death of her youngest daughter, Zamambo Mkhize, the income from these bags have become a dire necessity.

According to Mkhize her late daughter was one of the main breadwinners in the family.

Speaking to the Northglen News last week she said she hoped to start her own business where she could also help train and employ people from her community.

Known affectionately as ‘Gogo Reginah’ she has earned the respect and assistance of Durban North residents, Taitum, Karin and Kayla van Rensburg as well as Felicity Stander. The group has been spreading the news of Mkhize creations across social media in the hopes of helping her realise her dreams.

Many people have already taken interest in her unique creations, which can take her up to four days to make.

“She is such a special and inspirational lady, and puts so much love and care into everything she does. Despite her own hardships she has remained positive and determined to help others,” said Taitum.
