Unemployment addressed at KwaMathambo

High unemployment rate in north Durban informal settlement highlighted.

FOLLOWING the recent violent protests on North Coast Road, DA provincial leader, Zwakele Mncwango, visited the KwaMathambo Informal Settlement on Thursday.

Earlier this month, hundreds of the residents at the shack settlement barricaded roads in the north Durban area following the announcement of the ANC candidates list.

Mncwango addressed the crowds on housing, lack of service delivery, corruption and unemployment.

“The people are in desperate need of a change. Many of the people from the community were at the settlement today, which means there is a serious issue with unemployment within this community, as there is in many other settlements,” he said.

One of the newest residents at the settlement, Peetrus Joubert, is one of those unemployed community members. He has been living at KwaMathambo for two weeks.

He confirmed that he, like many others at the settlement, pays R350 rent every two weeks.

The 42-year-old said he earns his rent money by guarding cars at night in Broadway and begging at intersections during the day.

DA candidate for Ward 34, Bobby Maharajh, said he was frustrated with the lack of service delivery in the area. “The rubble from the devastating fire that ripped through the settlement in March is still lying on the municipal land across the settlement. Despite numerous complaints, it has not been removed,” he said.
