KZN Premier spends millions on Youth Day

The DA argued that the millions could have been used to fund over 100 bursaries.

THE KZN Premier, Willies Mchunu, has recently faced heavy criticism after it was alleged that his office had spent R3.2-million on the Youth Day celebrations in Newcastle last week.

Swelakhe Shelembe, the DA  KZN Youth Interim Leader, said in a press release that they would be requesting a full report on the celebration expenses.

“Should the premier not provide us with a response, we will submit an application to access the documentation in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act,” said Shelembe.

“It is also a concern that the office of the Premier would spend so much money on celebrations at a time where youth unemployment is at its lowest due to economic meltdown. The money could have been used to equip our youth with the much needed skills development,” she added.

The funds, said Shelembe, could have been used to fund over 100 education bursaries.
