5 ways to surf the web safely

Digital criminals are constantly lurking on the web. Here are some ways to shield yourself from them.

USING the Internet in the 21st century is unavoidable. People do research online, purchase items and communicate on the web’s social media platforms.

However, hackers and fraudsters are lurking in every corner of the world wide web, and so extra precaution needs to be taken to evade these digital criminals.

Here are five of the top ten ways to surf the Internet safely:

1. Do not share any personal information on social media, such as your birthday or physical address, and do not accept friend requests from people that you do not know personally.
2. When making purchases online ensure that the website is secure. Unless the URL begins with ‘https’ (and not ‘http’) do not enter your credit card details.
3. Always disable your device’s Bluetooth or WiFi after usage. If left on hackers could gain access to the files and information on your device – including photos and contacts.
4. Step up your password difficulty by using a random sentence or phrase rather than a single word.
5. Avoid all websites and services that require location information.
