ANC MP under fire over lavish Oyster Box stay

The Social Development minister recently claimed that millions of SA citizens could live off R753 a month.

Bathabile Dlamini, the Department of Social Development minister, has recently come under fire after a recent lavish stay at the uMhlanga’s posh Oyster Box Hotel. It is alleged that the ANC MP, along with two other party members, stayed in an R11 000-a-night suite last night.

Last week, Dlamini was also heavily criticised after she claimed that R753 was enough to sustain grant beneficiaries (this included food and other essential items).

The DA Shadow Minister of Social Development, Bridget Masango, said the stay proved that Dlamini could not even survive on ‘a meagre R753’ a month.

It was recently revealed that Dlamini earns R2.3-million annually or R191 000 per month.

Masango said the DA has filed a report questioning who paid for the stay, the reason behind the luxury stay and who the alleged additional ANC members are who stayed with her.

Lumka Oliphant, the Department of Social Development’s spokesman, refused to confirm or deny the allegations.

“We will not be dragged into the DA’s conduct. There are processes of government that need to followed. Should the DA or anyone have any questions regarding the minister’s whereabouts they can use the appropriate channels to do so. It is unfortunate that the DA is using the media to get this information,” she said.
