‘Hactivists’ launch attack on SABC

Anonymous Africa launched a cyber attack against the public broadcaster in response to its recent censorship efforts.

A ‘HACKTIVIST ‘group known as Anonymous Africa launched a massive cyber attack on the public broadcaster, the SABC, yesterday.

Several of the SABC’s websites, including some of its radio stations (SAFM and 5FM) experienced downtime until 4pm.

Via Twitter, the group claimed responsibility for the hacking, saying it was a retaliation to the SABC chief operating officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng’s, decision to censor or block all images of members of the public burning private or municipal property.

“Every time censors the SABC more, we are going to come back and keep hitting harder until can not get up again. ,” the group tweeted.
Before launching the attack, the activism group warned journalists that around lunchtime the SABC would experience one of the cyber attacks to ever hit South Africa.
While the group have halted their attack and the websites were back online after 4.30pm, they have warned the public broadcaster that they intend to launch additional attacks. ” A lot more needs to be exposed and talked about,” Anonymous Africa tweeted.
