False protest action messages circulating on social media

A message about protests is leading to widespread panic, said a local security company.

HUNDREDS of social media posts are being erroneously shared about possible protest action returning to Durban. On Monday, hundreds of violent protesters shut down major routes in and out of the city,  burning tyres and stoning vehicles.

According to Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen, the company has been inundated with requests from the public to query information about ongoing protest action within the greater north Durban area.

“We would like to assure the public that there is no ongoing protest action within the greater north Durban area. Our team is doing ongoing patrols within the affected areas and alleged hotspots and should anything be noticed, we will inform the necessary authorities as well as inform the public through our various communication channels.

“We urge the public to refrain from forwarding, sharing and posting messages and information as it leads to widespread panic and unnecessary waste of resources from authorities. The golden rule of social media is, if you haven’t personally seen or witnessed it, don’t post it,” he said.
