City offers support to Dome congregants

The SAPS and the fire department are currently investigating the cause of the fire.

THE city has pledged its support to the congregation of the Durban Christian Centre following a fire that gutted the well-known landmark on Tuesday night. eThekwini Municipality acting mayor, Nomvuzo Shabalala, expressed sympathy to members of the church and applauded the efforts of all those involved in trying to save it.

From Sunday, 19 June the church will be having services every Sunday at the Jesus Dome premises at 8am and 10.30am in a tent that will be pitched in the car park.

“Our prayers are with the congregants of church for this unfortunate incident and we are grateful that there were no fatalities,” said Shabalala.

“We must commend our emergency personnel for their quick response, within an hour the raging flames were brought under control. It is clear in the images shown that the fire was out of control but they managed to handle the situation very well and prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the church structure.”

While the roof of the main auditorium collapsed, some offices and other structures in the vicinity were not engulfed by the raging flames. SAPS and the fire department are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
