R20 000 bail for M4 hit-and-run suspect

Survivor, Junaid Singh said he was left devastated by the court's decision.

THE survivor of the tragic M4 hit-and-run accident said today that he was ‘shattered’ by the Durban Magistrate’s Court’s decision to grant the suspect bail.

Magistrate, Mahomed Motala granted Sunningdale resident, Kearadilwe Refilwe Modise Moloto (28) R20 000 bail on Tuesday, after she briefly made her second appearance in court.

Junaid Singh (28) said, “I am shattered and heartbroken. She killed two people that night, paid R10 000 for each life and is now allowed to roam free.”

“I lost two friends – best friends. They were like brothers to me and I will never see them again. What’s more I have had to undergo surgery to repair my arm, which was snapped in half. I have been in constant pain since that night.  It just doesn’t seem fair,” he added.

On Wednesday, 18 May, Sumeer Maharaj (26) and Praven Mahabir (25) came to the aid of their friend, Junaid Singh (28), who had been forced to stop at the M4 on-ramp near Blue Lagoon due to a flat tyre. The trio was busy changing the vehicle’s tyre when a speeding vehicle crashed into them.

Maharaj was declared dead at the scene while Mahabir died early the next morning. Singh escaped with only a broken hand. Singh claimed that driver fled the scene in a black Kia Koup.

Modise was arrested on 24 May, after she reportedly took her car to a local panel-beater. She alledgely claimed to have ‘knocked and unknown object’, however, the panel beater recognised the model and colour of the vehicle and contacted the police.

She was ordered to surrender her passport and report to the Durban Central Police Station every morning. Modise has been charged with two counts of culpable homicide, reckless or negligent driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and defeating the ends of justice.

The case has been adjourned until 8 August.
