Beach clean-ups continue at Blue Lagoon

Join the Beach Clean-Up KwaZulu-Natal organisation as they tackle the litter at Blue Lagoon on World Ocean Day on Wednesday, 8 June.

IN an effort to eliminate the ever-growing piles of rubbish and litter cluttering the Durban North shores, clean-ups are being held on a regular basis.

Joining the fray is Mount Edgecombe resident, Jacqui Jonker, with her organisation, Beach Clean-Up KwaZulu-Natal. Jonker is set to host another clean-up on World Ocean Day on Wednesday, 8 June at the Blue Lagoon Beach.

Last week the environmentalist expressed shock and outrage at the state of the beaches, saying she was hoping to see a large group of volunteers supporting the initiative.

“It’s so sad to see the beach in this state. Every week more and more litter is washed down the river and onto our beaches. While we need to get to the source of the of the problem to really resolve the issue, in the meantime it is important that we collect as much of the litter to prevent it from polluting our oceans,” she said.

Jonker said she encouraged companies, schools and individuals to support the initiative.

“As an education and awareness effort, we especially want to encourage schools to join. I believe by seeing the state of the beach, the importance of recycling and proper waste management will resonate more with our youth,” she said.

While the organisation will be providing plastic bags on the day, volunteers are urged to take gloves, rakes, gumboots, sunscreen and drinking water.
