Police swoop in on ‘hijacked’ properties

The Greenwood Park SAPS carried out an operation against illegal activities in hijacked or abandoned properties.

ON Thursday the Greenwood Park SAPS took a stand against hijacked properties in the Greenwood Park and surrounding areas.

According to W/O Leon Audh, spokesman for the station vagrants and illegal immigrants had invaded numerous abandoned and dilapidated houses in the area.

He said the station had also recently been inundated with complaints from the community regarding various illegal activities at these properties.

The police members, with assistance from the Liquor Board, Town Planning and Durban Metro Police swooped in on these properties, where they disconnected several illegal electricity connections.

Audh said Town Planning would now assess these houses to either condemn them or identify them for demolition.

“The owners of these abandoned or hijacked houses are now being tracked by Town Planning to take responsibility for the upkeep of their houses,” he said.

Audh added that the station would be continuing with such operations in the future to root out the shebeens, drug dealers and other criminals housed in these properties.
