Eagles take CHOC under their wings

World record attempt brings in R46 000 for Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (CHOC).

A GROUP of local residents who attempted to break a Guinness World Record in April while also raising funds for the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (CHOC) have handed over a cheque for R46 660 to the foundation.

The charity drive, which was started by Prestondale resident, Nick Ferreira, saw his team, the East Coast Eagles, take on various other teams in a 36-hour action cricket marathon called the East Coast Challenge at the Action Sports Centre on Rinaldo Road.

Not only did the local Durban heroes accomplish this epic feat, but they also successfully raised more than R45 000, which they officially handed over to the regional manager of CHOC in Durban, Agie Govender, recently.

“This incredibly generous donation will be used to improve the facilities and well-being of the children whom we take care of at the home. I am so proud of these selfless Durbanites for taking on such a huge challenge and raising such a substantial amount of money on their own. Every bit of support that we receive at the home is greatly appreciated and we cannot thank them enough,” said Govender.

Captain of the East Coast Eagles, Nick Ferreira, was on hand to hand over the cheque to Govender. He was delighted about the amount they had managed to raise and thanked all those who were involved in the challenge for their contribution and support.

“My team and I are incredibly grateful to have been able to contribute towards a worthy cause like CHOC, and to see first-hand the work that they do with the children is even more satisfying. I have seen first-hand with my mom the effect that cancer has on people, so I’m relieved and grateful that there is an organisation like CHOC with dedicated staff that can help children fight this disease, and that we can play our small part in supporting these real heroes.”
