Medical waste dumped along Beachwood

In addition to condoms, a Redhill resident found antiretroviral, blood pressure and tuberculosis tablets scattered along the beach.

A REDHILL resident is outraged after he came across medical waste that had been illegally dumped near the uMngeni River. William Collingwood said he had on several occasions spotted condoms, tablets and other medical waste scattered near the uMngeni River mouth – the latest discovery had been made on Saturday.

Before the heavy rains a few weeks ago he first spotted the first batch of waste.

According Collingwood, male and female condoms as well as antiretroviral drugs and blood pressure and tuberculosis tablets had been dumped. He said he suspects that the waste had been dumped upstream.

While most of the labels on the bottles or containers have been washed off, a wrapper of one of the female condoms identified the waste as belonging to the Department of Health. The wrapper read, ‘Not for sale’.

“In addition to the illegal dumping of waste, which should be strictly controlled, the condoms that have been dumped are still within their expiry date. Most of them only expire is 2018. It is a complete waste,” he added.

Collingwood confirmed that he had contacted the Department of Health.
