Gill crowned European line dance winner

La Lucia dancer wins major competition in Ireland.

IT is said that dancing is like dreaming, but with your feet. This is certainly true for La Lucia resident, Gill Townsend, who was recently crowned the European Intermediate Silver Line Dance Champion (solo style) in a competition in Ireland. Gill, who is also a aerobics instructor as well as a Latin and ballroom competitive dancer, said she was in disbelief when she was named the winner of the competition.

“I was the only South African dancer in the competition and my aim was to be as competitive as possible but also use the competition to gain experience for the World Line Dance Masters in Blackpool later this year. When I was announced the winner, I was in utter disbelief, followed swiftly by thinking ‘I need a drink’,” she joked.

“This has been one of my highlights this year. This competition was really about getting up to the international level and trying to improve on my results. This was my second international competition, in last year’s world champs I finished fifth. My goal for the world champs is to finish in the top three,” she said.

Townsend will also be performing in the Dance Some More show at the iZulu theatre, Sibaya on 21 May, alongside 92 line, belly, Latin and ballroom dancers from Floorcraft Dance Studio and Maya Dance Company. Profits from the show will be donated to the House of Love and Hope (HOLAH) baby home. Tickets cost R100 and are available through Computicket.
