‘Saders scrape home against Impi

PhotoNote Crusaders win nailbiter against Impi at home.

THE PhotoNote Crusaders recorded their second successive home victory of their Fidelity Security Moor Cup season, beating the UKZN Impi 14-13. In what was a tough game, Chris van Niekerk scored the only try of the game for the ‘Saders and has now scored in all of his team’s matches this season. Two drop goals, from Hennie ‘Bakkies’ Botha, and Jeandre Small, added the finishing touches to a game mired in unforced handling errors. Once again, poor discipline cost the Durban North team as one of their players was sin-binned in the game.

Unfortunately this is now the third successive week the team has suffered a yellow card. Coach of the team, Shaun van Rensburg, said he was pleased with the win, but said poor handling and ill-discipline was costing his team.

“We can’t keep playing without a full compliment of 15 men, it’s disruptive and allows the opposition team to gain the upper hand and put us under pressure. We are still trying to find our feet and while we won the game, mistakes like the ones we keep making can cost us. The conditions weren’t great, it was a bit slippery out there, having said that I’m really happy that we were able to pull off another win. This has really boosted our morale. I thought our forwards, especially my prop and flank, were outstanding. We now play the Jaguars away from home and it’s important that we build on the momentum we’ve gained from our home games,” he said.
