Residents concerned over speeding in Longwoods Drive

The residents' desperation and concern over the situation is clearly evident by the chevron warning tape that they have wrapped around three trees at the site.

FOLLOWING a number of requests and appeals from the community, Ward 110 candidate councillor, Pete Graham, has been advocating to have speed-calming measures erected on Longwoods Drive in Glenhills.

With three reported accidents in 2014, one of which involved a fatality, Graham said residents felt the road was dangerous, particularly along the upper end, at the sharp bend. The residents’ desperation and concern over the situation is clearly evident by the chevron warning tape that they have wrapped around three trees at the site.

“As a frequent user of the road, I can account for the speeding and reckless driving on the road. And while there have only been three reported accidents, there are a number of incidents and close calls taking place on a regular basis. The road is clearly unsafe and we must do what we can to make it safer,” he said.

On 12 April, the eThekwini Transport Authority’s traffic engineering department dismissed Graham’s appeal for speed bumps, saying, Longwoods Drive did not meet the requirement for the implementation of speed humps.

However, Graham said that he also pushed for speed limiting and chevron signs to be placed along the road during a recent meeting.

He said he had also approached the parks department to trim the trees, which are currently blocking the street lights on the road, leaving it in complete darkness and adding to the danger of the road.
