UPDATE: Trolley victim murdered in attempted rape

“When the boyfriend came to the woman’s aid the suspect knocked him unconscious with a metal pipe,” said police.

THE woman whose body was found in a shopping trolley on the M4 Ruth Highway on Tuesday night was said to have been murdered during an attempted rape. She was found wearing only a panty.

Lt Raymond Deokaran of the Durban North SAPS, said the victim and her boyfriend, along with a ‘friend’ were ‘partying’ on Armstrong Avenue near the La Lucia service station, off William Campbell Drive when the incident occurred.

The couple’s friend reportedly made sexual advances towards the woman and when she refused he became violent.

“When the boyfriend came to the woman’s aid the suspect knocked him unconscious with a metal pipe. The suspect tried to rape the woman, but she put up a fight and he hit her on the head – killing her.”

The suspect allegedly wrapped her body in a blanket and loaded it into the trolley. The  suspect was seen pushing the suspicious cart towards the M4.

Deokaran said the alleged murderer is known in the area. “We received information which we are using to track the suspect,” he added. The woman’s identity remains a mystery, as the boyfriend was only able to provide police with her first name.

Marshall Security’s reaction officers were the first to respond. When they approached the man, he flung the cart and fled across the highway into the dense bush, said spokesman, Kyle van Reenen.

“On closer inspection of the abandoned shopping trolley, the body of a deceased female, approximately 30 years of age was discovered, having suffered fatal blunt force head injuries,” he said.

The Durban North SAPS and Durban Central K-9 unit were called in to assist, but despite an extensive search the suspect remains at large.
