Another fire rages through Joannas Road settlement

Fire fighters battled the inferno for three hours.

IT took fire fighters three hours to extinguish the blaze that ripped through an informal settlement on Johannas Road in the Sea Cow Lake yesterday afternoon.

The fire reportedly destroyed 60 homes, leaving 150 people desolate, said ward councillor Deochand Ganesh.

Most people escaped the inferno, which quickly spread through the settlement due to the strong wind experienced throughout the day.

“One woman, however, was treated for smoke inhalation and stabalised at the scene,” said Ganesh.

He said he had requested assistance from the disaster management department, who would assess the damage and provide temporary shelter and meals. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

This follows another devastating fire, which destroyed 90 homes in December last year.
