Crusaders thump hapless Highlanders

Crusaders score 10 tries and record their first win of the season.

THE PhotoNote Crusaders recorded their first victory of their Fidelity Security Moor Cup season beating the Newcastle Highlanders 70-19 at home at their Ranleigh Crescent ground. The Durban North team outscored their opponents dotting down 10 times to the Highlanders’ three. It was a much improved performance from the ’Saders after losses to Varsity College and College Rovers in the opening rounds.

The local team’s exciting speedster, Selwin White, ended the game with a deserved hat-trick. The first half, though error-strewn, saw the Crusaders assert their control in small patches of the game which saw them opening the scoring with Lewis Brunger. Unforced errors in the midfield saw the Highlanders stage a momentary comeback but the team talk at half time seemed to rally the Durban North team who put the foot on the gas scoring six tries.

Coach of the team, Shaun van Rensburg, said he was pleased with the performance, but insisted he expects more from his team.

“It’s great to get our first win of the season so that’s definitely a positive. All told I wasn’t happy with our first half performance, we made far too many mistakes and it cost us. I wanted my team to hit fifth gear straight away, we really needed this win. We’ve had a difficult start to the season and while there were errors, it was great to see the team encouraging each other, talking on the field and attacking with more structure in the game,” he said.
