Residents mourn after La Lucia’s Ginger is put down

A Durban North resident reacted with shock to a beloved feline's death.

GINGER, the stray cat that had taken up residence at the La Lucia Mall, has died. The decision was taken to put the beloved feline down this morning after a feline AIDS test turned out positive.  The news of his death has sent shockwaves through the animal loving community.

Durban North resident and animal lover, Penny Toubkin, who was one of Ginger’s carers, said they are devastated by the news.

“We are all devastated. Stanley, the car guard who fed Ginger on a daily basis, is very upset as well and we desperately feel for him because that’s what made his day. One of the other ladies who also looked after Ginger, Leslie Myburgh, took him to the vet this morning for a check-up. She asked for all the injections and to check his teeth.

“The vet then gave him a feline Aids test and it was positive.  She thought it best to put him down because we can’t medicate him on a daily basis. Leslie had a cat just like that and it was sad to watch it suffering. We’d just like to thank everyone who cared so dearly for him and for all the donations of food and love given to Ginger. We’d also like to thank all the car guards and especially Stanley, who is going to miss his friend dearly,” she said.
