Divers spot plane wreckage off uMhlanga coast
The plane wreckage debris unlikely to be from flight MH370, say police and the local councillor.
POLICE have shrugged off speculation that debris spotted off the coast of uMhlanga is part of the MH370 flight that went missing in 2014. Malaysia Airlines MH370’s disappearance is one of the world’s biggest aviation mysteries. The plane vanished from radar on March 8, 2014 while en route from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing, with 239 people on board.
The news comes after two pieces of debris recovered from beaches in Mozambique, one found in December and the other in February, which are said to be from the missing airline.
Maj Thulani Zwani, spokesman for the provincial SAPS, confirmed that police divers had been called out after spear fisherman reportedly spotted plane debris.
“Divers from the police search and rescue unit looked to find a piece of a plane which was seen on the sea floor. But after a thorough search of the area, nothing was found and the search was called off. I cannot say whether these parts were from the MH370 plane,” he said.
Heinz de Boer also mooted the suggestion, saying he believed the parts were from a light aircraft which crashed on Virginia Beach almost a month ago.
“I highly doubt that wreckage is from MH370, it may be from the plane which crashed over the Yak Week at Virginia Airport. Large chunks of the aircraft wreckage were washed into the sea. I believe part of what the spear fisherman saw was a blue piece of wreckage, which is the same colour as the light aircraft,” he said.
