Dovetons celebrate six decades of love

The Dovetons met at the Daily News and soon started exchanging messages along the newsroom 'pulley' throughout the day.

IT was an office romance that blossomed into a near seven decades of marriage for Durban North residents, Pat and Jock Doveton. On Thursday last week, the couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

The two met in 1946 while working at the Daily News. Jock, who was an apprentice compositor, ran into Pam at the canteen, where they struck up a conversation.

He would later invite her to lunch and the two would also exchange messages along the newsroom ‘pulley’ throughout the day.

The two officially began courting after Pam’s mother invited him to dinner. Jock would then regularly drive on his bike from his home in Umbilo to visit Pam in Durban North.

“It was love at first sight,” said Pam. “We both shared a love of music and animals. We just immediately took a liking to each other,” she added.

The Dovetons exchanged vows in 1951, and in 1952 they moved into Red Hill. Two years later, they celebrated the birth of their first son. Their legacy would later grow with two more sons and eventually seven grandchildren.

When asked what the recipe to their success was, Pam said, “The family that prays together stays together. I think our religion has been one of the most important aspects of our marriage.”
