uMhlanga domestic worker wanted for R10 000 theft

A local resident discovered her domestic worker's Facebook page with her posing in photos wearing clothing stolen from their home.

AN uMhlanga resident has opened a case of theft against their domestic worker of four years after it was discovered that she had been stealing. The resident, who did not want to be named, said they had opened a case of theft of R10 000 at the Durban North SAPS. What’s more, the resident also discovered her domestic worker’s Facebook profile in which she posed with several items of clothing belonging to the family.

“I’m shocked and very hurt, we treated her like one of the family. We shared everything with her. Because we travel frequently, we began to notice small items going missing over a period of time. When we questioned her about it, she denied any wrongdoing. We then noticed bottles of wine from our cellar were going missing as well. Even though we had installed cameras in the home, she was smart enough to avoid being caught pinching anything.

“Things came to a head last week when she said she had to go to Zimbabwe for a funeral as her sister suddenly died and miscarried her twins. We paid for the ticket out of compassion, only to find her standing outside her new employer’s home in uMhlanga, wearing my jersey, just down the road from us.

“We demanded an explanation, but she could not give one. We decided to open a case of theft for R10 000 for various items she had stolen. This includes food, clothing and alcohol. We even discovered one of my daughter’s bags, which she had also stolen and thrown over the fence with a bottle of wine in it,” she said.

While the resident’s ordeal has left her shaken, she urged other residents to be vigilant and wary.

“This has taught me not be too trusting and be more aware of my surroundings. In a WhatsApp communication she confirmed that she was in Zimbabwe, when in fact she never left Umhlanga,” she said.
