Voter registration address hiccup concerns councillors

Councillors urge residents to verify their addresses and make sure their details are correct.

THE final voter registration weekend may be in full swing but many residents in the North Durban surburbs are feeling the effect of the address hiccup by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) ahead of the local government elections in August.

Both councillors, Heinz de Boer and Shaun Ryley said it was disconcerting that many voter’s addresses were not recorded. According to records following the last registration weekend, there are approximately 6.92 million voters currently on the voters’ roll without any address details.

Many residents have used the registration weekend to confirm their addresses.

Although voters came in drips and drabs, many came in specifically to confirm their addresses.

“There have been a few hiccups, the main issue is the fact that people’s addresses are outstanding. Many were sent texts by the IEC and are trying to rectify it. What I’ve noticed, particularly at the Northwood School voting registration station, officials are asking people to write their addresses on a voters roll, this is incorrect. They are supposed to fill out a form. I urge people to check their details and to make use of this weekend to find out if they are registered,” Ryley said.

To find out if you are registered, SMS your ID number to 32810 at a cost of R1 or contact o800 118 000. Voting stations are open on Saturday, 9 April and Sunday, 10 April from 8am to 5pm
