Guiding the bright stars of future

An appeal has been made for more volunteers to join the initiative.

EVERY year, thousands of Durban youths go through life without any form of guidance or mentorship from trusted adults. In a province plagued by HIV, child-headed homes and orphans are an all-too-common reality where children are forced to shape their values and sense of self on their own.

However, through the Bright Stars Mentorship Programme, launched by the non-profit organisation, The Peace Agency, Joanne Teunissen and Sandi Bennet aspire to change all that.

Targeting four children’s homes in the greater Durban community, the programme strives to match volunteer mentors with vulnerable children in need of strong and caring role models to guide and support them.

“Through a thorough and careful screening process we match the volunteer mentors with a child who matches their personality and capabilities,” explained Teunissen, who also runs The Durban North Baby Home through the NPO.

When a volunteer signs up, he or she is required to dedicate an hour a week (for at least a year) to his or her mentee.

“Many of the children come from broken homes or have lived on the streets. They are in desperate need of regular positive influence and empowerment to help build their self-esteem and encourage their dreams,” she added.

All volunteers will receive training. Joanne’s husband, Bjorn, who is one of the current 80 mentors, said the mentors were not required to take on a financial or guardian role.

“The critical aspect of the programme is the time you dedicate. Helping that child set goals or guiding them to achieve their aspirations is what it is all about,” he said.

“The first few sessions are the most difficult, but once you have found that common ground, be it soccer or a love of music, you will begin to embark on one of the most rewarding experiences,” he said.

An appeal has been made for more men to join as there are many young men who require support. For more information visit the website www.brightstarsmentors.org.za.
