Young athletes share their success

The KTK Netball team, who is raising funds to participate in the Disney International Youth Netball Tournament, has donated a portion of their funds to the The La Lucia Baby House

A PASSIONATE team of Durban netball players have honoured their commitment to give back to the community as they aim to raise thousands of Rands for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in the Disney International Youth Netball Tournament at the end of the year.

During a Netball Super League at the Durban North Action Sports Arena and with their fine food and wine hamper fundraiser, the athletes raised R11 000, and with that were able to donate R1 180 to The La Lucia Baby House.

Last week, some of the girls presented the donation to the home and spent some time showering the babies with love and attention. To achieve their ultimate goal, the aspiring athletes of KTK Netball are facing the exceptional challenge of raising the funds for their endeavour to the United States.

However, as they tackle this daunting task they have vowed to donate 10 per cent of their raised funds to local charities.

Durban North players, Anele Mkhize and Catherine Harman, with two of the babies at The La Lucia Baby House.

So, on the days that these young women are not practising on the courts, they are working and brainstorming on ideas to complete their mission. By December last year, they had assimilated R22 000.

“It is awesome,” said one of the Durban North-based players, Catherine Harman. “We have worked hard and it feels great to be able to support such a deserving organisation. We have been given this opportunity to take part in an amazing event and to be able to give back to those who are less fortunate along the way is such an honour,” she said.

Sheila Collins, the crisis ‘mom’ at the home, said that as a non-profit organisation they are entirely dependent on donations. Since its launch in 2013, the home has cared for 25 orphaned, abandoned or legally-surrendered infants.

“It is very admirable for these girls to share their raised funds with the babies who have had such a difficult start in life. Every penny is appreciated but this donation is a particularly special one,” she said.

The next fundraising initiative, an action lumo evening, is set to take place in June. Local netball teams have been invited to take up the challenge of playing the exciting game in luminescent lighting. Contact Lu Harman via e-mail on harman.louise7@gmail.com.
