2016 community survey on the go

Selected houses in Durban North and uMhlanga, as well as KZN have been selected to be part of a community survey on the go.

THE Community Survey 2016 (CS 2016) which began earlier this month is now taking place in Durban North and uMhlanga. The survey staff will visit more than 1.3 million selected households.

Several residents have contacted the paper, saying they were concerned this was a scam. However, Durban North councillor, Shaun Ryley, said there is nothing to be worried about.

The CS 2016 will use Computer Assisted Paper Interview (CAPI) methodology, where data collection happens digitally via electronic devices rather than the traditional paper method. Through the use of digital devices, the quality of data will improve because of inbuilt controls in the electronic questionnaire.

“The fieldworkers will all carry an ID card which includes a hologram image of the person, this needs to be produced when they visit your house. They will also be wearing yellow aprons and a cap carry a bag.

“They will have an electronic questionnaire device. I’ve received some concerns from residents but I urge people to be discerning with their answers, and if they are unsure, they are welcome to contact me or the supervisors. The survey is a large-scale survey that happens in-between Censuses 2011 and 2021,” Ryley said.

According to Statistics South Africa, the data collected will help local municipalities. The CS 2016 results will be released by the end of June, within two months of completion of data collection.
