Rocky is set to change the pit bull ‘rep’

Durban North resident, Nicole Linden, hopes to demolish the common misconceptions surrounding pit bulls though her beloved hound, Rocky.

HE walked straight up to the Northglen News team – Rocky, a four-year-old pit bull’s ears were pricked with attention as we met with him and his owner, Nicole Linden, last week. However, his wagging tail and friendly eyes showed only excitement at the opportunity to meet someone new.

This is what the Durban North resident said she was determined to show the world.

She said pit bulls have been given a bad ‘rep’. They are often perceived as vicious hounds meant only as guard dogs. However, she said she she planned on demolishing these common misconceptions.

To do this, the 25-year-old animal lover has decided to take Rocky to various old age and children’s homes where he could provide some ‘paw-fect’ companionship to these individuals.

Recently the duo visited the Villa Sunfield Home in Durban North, where Linden said Rocky was ‘an instant hit’.

“He loved it and the people at the home loved him. He gave so many kisses. Many of the people at the home are terminally ill, however they still managed to sit up and greet him. They all beamed when he came around. He was so gentle, as if he knew that they that he needed to be extra careful around them,” she said.

While Rocky has not been trained as a companion animal, Linden said she had gone through obedience training with him.

“I definitely believe that an animal’s temperament has a lot to do with how they are raised. Pit bulls are not naturally aggressive, they are actually very loyal and lovable, and Rocky is testament to this. He is an amazing soul. He loves people and kids and he is the most gentle and well-behaved boy ever,” she said.
