Getting into the Easter spirit

The pupils at the Masifundisane Pre-Primary School recently learned about the meaning and significance of Easter.

THE scent of delicious hot cross buns filled the air as the littlies at the Masifundisane Pre-Primary School in Broadway celebrated Easter last week.

The local non-profit organisaton, which has been providing outreach to underprivileged children for the last ten years, spent the whole of Wednesday teaching the pupils about the meaning and significance of the annual holiday.

During the day, the children were treated to traditional baked treats, donated to the school by Pick n Pay. Currently the volunteer-based school caters for 50 children at Grade R, Grade 00 and Grade 000 levels.

“Masifundisane Pre-Primary School was started as facility where children of domestic workers could learn English so that it would not be a struggle for them to learn the language when they are old enough to go to school,” explained the school’s principal, Sandy Christie.

Now the school provides early childhood development (ECD) to any children whose parents cannot afford to send them to a pre-school facility. ECD is important for the foundation of any child’s learning abilities, explained Christie.
