Bowlers spread the warmth

The Northlands Bowling Club are collecting old club jackets and winter clothes for a winter warmth drive.

THE members of the Northlands Bowling Club were inspired to change the lives of the less fortunate after they recently decided to redesign their club jackets. With winter set to breach the Durban shores in the next few months, the club has urged its members to donate their old jackets towards a winter warmth drive.

Inspiration was drawn from one of the club members, Val Smith, who is employed as the secretary at the Glenashley Library.

She said the local reading facility had recently begun to collect scarves and beanies in support of the Mandela Winter Warmth Programme, and so she realised that in most cases the old jackets would ‘go to waste, hanging in the club members’ closets’. And so she facilitated the idea amongst the members of the club.

To date, 20 jackets have already been donated towards the cause. Sandy de Gier, ladies’ vice-president of the club, said they also welcomed donations of other warm clothing, including scarves and beanies.

“For the most part the donated items will go to communities of child-headed homes in AIDS-affected communities,” said Smith.

Donations can be dropped off at the Glenashley Library or the Northlands Bowling Club. Deadline for the donations is 15 April.
