The Rotary Club of Durban North has made an urgent appeal for volunteers to assist with its computer literacy programme.

FOR the last three years, The Rotary Club of Durban North has been facilitating computer literacy in the communities north of Durban through free computer training classes.

The project, said Alma Maxwell, president of the club, has increased the employment opportunities for dozens of people in the area. And with this news the popularity of the initiative has grown, which led to the club making an appeal for volunteers to assist with the initiative.

“Due to the popularity of these classes, they now urgently require volunteers to assist on a weekly basis,” said Maxwell.

Students are taught basic and intermediate Microsoft Word skills, basic Excel and file management skills. Volunteers also assist the students with setting up Gmail accounts, said volunteer, Peter Coutts. The classes are currently being attended by 30 regular students on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2pm to 3pm.

These classes are just one of the vocational service projects run by the club, said Maxwell. Volunteers also offer a life skills course, which is set to start on Saturday, 16 April.

“This eight-week programme is run on Saturday mornings and offers delegates the opportunity to learn various life skills, an area of education that is often overlooked. This free programme boasts an impressive line-up of presenters, who all willingly give of their time and talent to develop and grow the delegates’ skills,” she said.

While the classes are offered at no cost to interested parties, Cathy Stevens, a fellow volunteer, said they welcomed any form of donation to assist with the administration costs. The courses are offered at North Crest Primary School in Redhill.
